Aussie AFL To Advertise More Responsibly, by Greg Tingle - 8th April 2011

The AFL code has listened to news media, knockers, parents, players, media commentators, politicians and just about every other demo and cross section of Australian society and decided that they will make an effort to have their gambling advertising done more "responsibly." Just exactly how and what is involved remains to be fully disclosed, but the early signs are very encouraging. Media Man and Gambling911 probe responsible betting Aussie Rules style...

AFL CEO top dog Andrew Demetriou advises the code is rather concerned about the level of gambling advertising in and around the great game and is aiming to make promotions more responsible.

Advertisements of gambling are a dime a dozen in and near venues, during television and radio broadcasts, in magazines (including their own) newspapers and on websites, once again - including their own.

Demetriou advised the league, which has deal with betting agencies such as Tabcorp and James Packer 50% owned Betfair so the game's integrity can be maintained, would look to make wagering advertising and the like less obtrusive.

A Media Man spokesperson said "At present AFL betting ads and promos are pretty impossible to miss and quite a dear in headlights situation. Blind Freddy wouldn't miss the gambling promos. We think its a good thing that they water down the ads and promos. A lot of punters have already signed up, but of course there's always going to be more. It's about striking the balance and being responsible".

Demetriou said "Obviously they've got to advertise and we'd like to see if we can explore ways of doing it more responsibly and a bit more sensitively, and I don't think that's an uncommon view. It's everywhere. You only have to pick up a newspaper and it's there, watch television and it's there, it's on our website. It's going to be there. It's a matter of whether we look at ways we can try and do it a bit more responsibly."

Demetriou threw water on the suggestions the broadcasting rights arrangement would be announced at some stage on Friday and said there remained no deadline for an agreement to be reached.

"There's no cut-off. We have broadcast rights partners until the end of 2011 and it's only April. We've still got eight months. I don't like to give timelines because in my experience, they end up being longer than you predict. That's okay. We're having good, constructive dialogue, it's very positive, heading in the right direction but there's no rush."

Poached Sydney media man James "Man Of War" (MM tag) Warburton has been quizzed in court over the past week about his defection from Channel Seven to Network Ten, and the AFL broadcast rights have also been discussed in the court sessions.

A Media Man spokesperson joked "James and legal eagles, always remember, its better to make love than war, but as our LA friend Elvira said 'All is fair in love and war', and she told the world this at one of the very first WrestleMania's. In the world of news media its often a case of there being little no go signs as the stakes are that high. We think Warburton and the legal eagles have earned a relaxing weekend. Hopefully the focus can get back on quality football matches and not on websites, betting or legal aspects. Av a good weekend, work hard and play harder".

As always, know the odds, bet with your head, not over it, and have fun. Good luck.

Australian Media Wars: Warburton Most Wanted, by Greg Tingle - 8th April 2011

G'day media watchers, news media movers n shakers, punters, sports nuts, legal eagles, one and all. Today we probe the fun and games relating to James Warburton's early departure from Channel Seven, with the intention of starting at Network Ten, which has seen JW a regular in Australian court and talk of the Australian media landscape. Media Man and Gambling911 with the Warburton media war special...

AFL Rights Raised Via Warburton Stoush; Day 2 In Court Update...

Channel Seven's commercial director advised the process for awarding the Australian Football League's next sports broadcasting contract still had some way to run, the NSW Supreme Court heard on day 2 of the court hearing. Bruce McWilliam was giving evidence during the second day of Channel Seven's legal bid to postpone its former chief sales and digital officer James Warburton starting his new job as chief executive of Channel Ten. The current AFL broadcast deal, involving Seven, Ten and pay television operator, Foxtel, is in its final year. The AFL is understood to be seeking $1 billion in rights fees for the next 5-year deal. Quizzed by the super legal eagle - barrister for Warburton, John West, QC, whether the result of negotiations between the AFL and broadcasters would be known very soon, McWilliam said, "There's no end in sight in the current process in my mind." McWilliam then went on to say initial expectations were that the negotiations would be concluded at about the time of last year's AFL grand final but these kept being delayed. Channel's Seven and Ten made a preliminary presentation to the AFL recently, McWilliam told the court. He also said additional meetings would likely take place. "It just depends what the AFL requires and how they wish to conduct the process," McWilliam said. Ten announced Warburton's appointment as chief executive on March 2, with a commencement date of July 14 this year. Channel Seven states that conditions in Warburton's employment contract and participation in a management equity plan, dictate that Warburton has to wait until October 2012 before commencing work with any other media firm. That's quite a wait. Warburton's legal team says it believes the proposed transaction that will have Seven's media assets transferred to West Australian Newspapers Holdings, via a series of complex transactions, will cause the management equity plan to cease to exist. With that would disappear some of the restraints included in the plan on Warburton working for another media company. McWilliam said the proposed deal, due to be voted on by WAN shareholders later this month, would not dissolve the management equity plan. "'The scheme most definitely continues," McWilliam said. The case continues.

Media Contacts Printed Off By Warburton's Computer Prior To Resignation; Day 3 In Court...

Confidential contact details of clients, agencies and Seven Network staff were printed from James Warburton’s computer the day before he resigned from the company it has been alleged in court. On the third day of the trial brought by Seven, the NSW Supreme court also heard that Warburton’s knowledge of tech Channel Seven had acquired that allows products to be superimposed into programs had the potential to harm the business. Seven is attempting to hold back Warburton from switching to Ten to become its chief executive until October next year, claiming he is in breach of a management equity plan. Warburton wants to start at Ten in July this year. Referring to a document of good old fashioned Microsoft Outlook contacts, the network director of sales at Seven and Warburton’s former deputy, stated in an affidavit: "I note from the information at the bottom of the document that it appears to have been printed by Mr Warburton’s executive assistant… at 8.39am on 1 March 2011, being the day before Mr Warburton resigned from SMG. The contacts list includes the telephone and email contact details of numerous SMG employees and a number of SMG clients and agencies." Under a heading in his affidavit called "Virtual advertising", Burnette told how in December last year Channel Seven inked a deal with a company that provides technology which enables products to be superimposed into a program during the post production-phase. He said Warburton’s inside knowledge of a potential revenue stream it could deliver to Seven was information a competitor would value highly. Burnette also recounted a chat he had with Warburton in December last year after Seven’s direct group sales manager, David Bellamy, announced he was resigning to move to Ten. Burnette claims Warburton said: "OK. He needs to be put on gardening leave immediately and keep him from starting for the three months or whatever the maximum is." The hearing continues.

Warburton Advised Leave Channel Seven Immediately Sir...

Commercial director of Channel Seven, Bruce McWilliam, said it would have been "very impolite" for him to have told a departing executive, James Warburton, that he wouldn't be able to take up Ten's offer as chief executive for a year because of anti-competition rules within a management equity participation scheme. McWilliam advised he had requested HR staff to check the restraint period, and had been aware that a press release from Channel Ten stated Warburton would start with the network as chief executive in July. McWilliam said Warburton told him that Seven's chief executive, David Leckie, wanted him out of the building immediately. "I … wouldn't always take what is said at face value," McWilliam told the restraint of competition case brought by Seven against Warburton. He believed it was "harsh to someone who had been with the company so long". In an affidavit put forward in the court, McWilliam advised Leckie had told him he didn't want Warburton "mixing with staff and being around whatever deals are done, it is untenable". McWilliam said: "But you didn't imply he was terminated did you?", to which Leckie responded, "Of course not. I am not stupid. I said to him, "You have to go on gardening leave, or whatever it is called." The court was advised that while Warburton had run the numbers for Channel Seven's passing interest in MasterChef, and was the sole Seven executive who advised against broadcasting Wimbledon as it was a "dying tradition", Warburton could not retain so much confidential information in his head that would justify Seven restraining him from working in the television industry until October 2012. Warburton's barrister, John West, QC, rejected Seven's contention of Warburton's "total mastery". In one cheeky interlude with McWilliam, West said: "You really can't help yourself, you keep on over-egging the custard", to which McWilliam responded: "He doesn't just forward emails. If the information in the email was incorrect he would have gone back to them and corrected it …"
The hearing before Justice Michael Pembroke continues.

Warburton Didn't Steal Media Documents; Day 4 (18th Apri 2011)...

SMG (Seven Media Group) has withdrawn on claims that ex executive James Warburton stole confidential information upon his sudden departure from the firm. Warburton walked on Seven in March to join competitor Ten Network as chief executive officer, a move that pissed off Seven. Warburton was to have commenced with Ten in July, but Seven has taken legal action in the NSW Supreme Court in a bid to delay him starting until October 2012. Seven contends provisions in his employment contract and participation in a management equity plan at Seven constrain him from working at another media firm. Seven had also argued in court that Warburton had snatched confidential information when he left the group, including strategy reports as well as ratings and revenue data. In the NSW Supreme Court yesterday, Tony Meagher, SC, representing Seven told the court that this claim has now been retracted. "There is no longer a threat he will use the confidential information," Meagher told the court, according to news reports. The case continues today, with Seven Media boss executive David Leckie to take the stand after the media group's HR. Australian media has been talking about the case under watercoolers and in coffee shops since it commenced, and the legal eagles are understood to be making a financial killing, as is often the case on high level legal media battles. WAR...BURTON - sure sounds like he's ready for another round on Aussie media wars. James Packer might like to see him take on Ten's gaming arm (or whatever the secret project might be). Bang!

Shane Bourne To Host Logie Awards...

TV actor Shane Bourne will host the 2011 Logie Awards. In a statement announcing who would be the host, TV Week said Bourne "promises to deliver what he does best" at the 53rd Annual Logie Awards on May 1 at Melbourne's Crown Entertainment Complex. "I am genuinely thrilled to be involved in TV's night of nights," Bourne said. "It's an honour to be following in the footsteps of such television luminaries as Bert Newton et al - and the timing couldn't be better. "I've always enjoyed myself immensely at the Logies, and since the chances of a nomination coming my way this year look pretty slim, I figure it's not a bad way of making sure I score an invitation." Bourne currently stars in the Seven Network drama series City Homicide, but is also known for his comedic roles. Most recently, he hosted the popular show Thank God You're Here and was a regular on Hey Hey It's Saturday for many years. Thank God You're Here won a Silver Logie for most outstanding comedy in 2007. Bourne was also nominated for the most outstanding actor Logie in 2003 for his leading role in medical drama MDA. This year's Logie nominees will be revealed on April 3. Critics are at the read to praise or pan Bourne. Will Twitter-Gate strike again at Crown Casino. Don't blink!

Computer giant Apple is tipped to be opening a new retail store in Melbourne. Leaks advise us the firm is planning a in or very close by to James Packer's Crown Casino. The rumour mill says Ken Gracey reckons an associate is fitting out the new store. Apple also had a job posting on Apple’s website seeking staff and lists a 3205 postcode. Yep, you guessed it - Crown Casino's postcode.

Basketball Star Gary Ervin Named League MVP At Crown Casino...

Wollongong Hawks mega star Gary Ervin has claimed the Andrew Gaze Trophy as the NBL's Most Valuable Player for the 2010-11 season. Ervin accepted the prestigious award at the league's annual presentation dinner last night at Melbourne's Crown Casino. It was only the second time in the NBL's 32-year history that a Hawks player has earned the title as the competition's best player. Ervin was also selected in the All-NBL First Team alongside Kirk Penney, Julian Khazzouh, Damian Martin and Gary Wilkinson.
Last night's event provided a double celebration for the Hawks, as consistent forward Oscar Forman took out the Most Improved Player award. Wollongong's Gordie McLeod made a compelling case for his second straight Coach of the Year trophy, but that honour went to Townsville's Trevor Gleeson. And while Hawks veteran forward Glen Saville was one of five finalists for Defensive Player of the Year, Perth Wildcats guard Martin was a worthy recipient of the award. Ervin was an instant hit with the Hawks and the club is doing everything possible to snatch the guard back for a second season. The 27-year-old averaged a league-leading 20.1 points per game, 4.5 assists (fourth), 3.5 rebounds and 1.3 steals, earning enough votes to out-poll fellow MVP candidates Penney and Khazzouh. Ervin is expect to stay loyal with the Hawks for sometime yet. Well done to all players and the support team.

James Packer Online Deal; Not Gaming - Retail...

James Packer has snatched a good chunks of the online retail space via an investment in DealsDirect. Ellerston Capital, owned by the Packer family's Consolidated Press Holdings, took a "minority cornerstone" investment in the online retailing site Deals Direct yesterday. "It signals a real coming of age for online retail, with businesses like Ellerston getting into the game, it is well and truly 'game on'," advised DealsDirect's co-founder Paul Greenberg. The transaction, estimated by the AFR at $10 million, shows the keen interest in online retail by the media and investment sector. It will facilitate DealsDirect, one of the biggest online only retailers in Australia, to fund more rapid growth in an industry that is surging ahead to keep up with the market, all the while while traditional bricks and motar retail goes through tough times. "While traditional offline retailers are still facing the challenges of building a sustainable ecommerce strategy, we think we are well poised to build on our first-mover advantage and our years of learning and experience in online sales," said Mr Greenberg. "We intend to grow our market share and enthusiastically pursue growth opportunities and this vote of confidence by Ellerston Capital allows us to do this rapidly." DealsDirect has more than 1.5 million unique browsers each month buying an item about once every 20 seconds, the company said. The investment from the Packer-controlled Ellerston Capital will allow the online retailer to make acquisitions and access strategic support while it seeks to consolidate its position in the e-commerce space. DealsDirect was founded by Greenberg and Mike Rosenbaum in 2004, and grew rapidly within eBay's framework of online partner shops - and independently of the major retail network site. DealsDirect sells 23 categories of retail goods to online shoppers including electronics, kitchenware, watches, toys and games, shipping direct from a warehouse and distribution centre in Sydney. "Given our leadership position in the space combined with Ellerston's appetite, one would expect this to be a substantial cornerstone investment which ensures we are extremely well-capitalised and have the resources to capitalise on the many opportunities in front of us," said Greenberg. The sector is red hot. In January, Yahoo7 took over online group buying site Spreets for $40 million. Cudo, yet another asocial buying site, is owned by NineMSN. Rupert Murdoch - News Ltd backed investment firm netus took a stake in OurDeal, which was created in May 2010. DealsDirect also launched its own group buying site DealMe in February to gain exposure to the trend. Ellerston Capital is not granting interviews at this stage. Packer continues to surge ahead in land based casinos in Australia, Asia, and also via online with Betfair and now DealsDirect - Ellerston Capital.

But he has called for “some pullback” from Wilkie on the slot machine pre-commitment scheme. Wilkie keeps saying the anti-gambling measure is non-negotiable, warning all he will withdraw his support for the Labor party if reforms are not implemented. The Gillard government suffered quite a setback on Friday when independent MP Tony Windsor said he would not back Wilkie's proposed slots reform. This may further destabilize the Labor party. Katter said he "strongly supported" the reform push with "I am four square behind where they will want to go, but I'll have a bit of an argument with them about how to get there. We have to go at this very, very carefully, I'm seeking discussions with Nick (Xenophon) and Andrew but I'm very supportive of the idea of tackling problem gamblers. There needs to be a bit of compromise. It's fine for them to make an ambit claim." Katter advised that a number of clubs in his electorate of Kennedy had closed recently, and that he wouldn't want to see more go the same way. "But we shouldn't keep them open if people are spending their kids' money in them," he said. Under the agreement reached with MP Wilkie, Labor still has until May to strike a deal with state governments on a reform package designed to reduce problem gambling. If it falls flat on its face in getting a deal the states, the government has agreed to enact federal legislation to put in place limits on pokies including a mandatory pre-commitment scheme that will force gamblers to carry smartcards that enforce bet limits before spinning to win. Withdrawal limits on ATMs near poker machines will also be limited to $250. With the support of the Greens, Wilkie and Katter, Labor appears to have locked a potential 75 of 76 necessary votes, leaving the fate of any federal legislation up to of crossbenchers Rob Oakeshott and Tony Crook. Yep, the soap opera that is Australian politics and gambling continues.

James Packer Casino King May Sell Consolidated Media Holdings...

James Packer still may sell his $790 million stake in pay-television investment company Consolidated Media Holdings. Packer has 49.9% of ConsMedia which owns a quarter of Foxtel and half of Fox Sports... has put the word out he will sell if someone is prepared to pay a reasonable price. There is speculation on what developments will happen in Australian media, but internet and gaming continues to ramp up. Packer remains high on pay-TV and there's the $2 billion merger talks between Foxtel and regional counterpart Austar. Some say his is unclear about the medium-term view for the pay-TV industry, one which has copped weak subscriber growth over the past couple of years. The media seem to love it when Packer gets in a verbal fight with another media personality however. How can we forget Packer VS Seven exec David Leckie stoush in October 2009 at the 70th birthday of ex Nine boss Sam Chisholm was reminiscent of his late father, Kerry. JP generally likes to keep the peace its understood. We also recall Last month, when Ten Network Holdings stole senior Seven exec James Warburton to be its new boss. Packer, who owns 9% of Ten, did not want to damage his close relationship with Seven executive chairman Kerry Stokes. Stokes owns 24.4% of ConsMedia. Packer is believed to not want to cause further strain on his relationship with acting Ten chief executive Lachlan Murdoch. Both these relationships somehow survived the Warburton appointment. Flogging ConsMedia is a way to avoid drams with media personalities. Insiders speculate a ConsMedia sale won't happen in a hurry. It was not so long ago that he was at war with Stokes in the C7 case. It was less than six months ago that he favoured media rub enough to buy into Ten. There are also only three potential buyers: Foxtel's other shareholders, Telstra and News Limited as well as Channel Seven. Stokes is in the midst of selling Seven Media Group to West Australian Newspapers while News Limited's parent, Rupert Murdoch's News Corporation, is consumed with the much bigger challenge of buying the 61% of BSkyB it does not already own. News and Seven are understood to not be that keen on ConsMedia.

Sport, fashion, music and pop culture mixed it up at the the Poker Cup held at Burswood Casino last week. Ex Wildcats star Nik Lackovic put together the cool event, which is an spring off from the Australia and New Zealand Poker Tour. Lackovic said he was keen to create something which gave back to the Strike a Chord for Cancer Foundation, run by local music promoter John Zaccaria and his wife, Noeleen. "I have known John since we were 10," Lackovic told the press "He is a cancer survivor so I wanted to put on a charity event which would raise some money and create some awareness for his foundation." A regular big-time poker player, Lackovic said he had a nice win at the Aussie Millions in January where he won more than $80,000. He also said he had given his fiancee Nicole McKendry some poker tips for her first time. New Zealand's Christchurch Casino Staff To Accept Redundancy Or Take Unpaid Leave...

Christchurch Casino's management is doing its best for its workers, Prime Minister John Key said today on the eve of a deadline where employees have to decide if they will accept redundancy or take unpaid leave. The Service and Food Workers Union (SFWU), which represents the workers, has called a meeting on Friday morning and is urging members not to make decisions before then. About 520 full-time and part-time workers have been offered redundancy with 4 weeks pay, or they can take unpaid leave until the casino opens again. Christchurch Casino chief executive Brett Anderson said the company had little choice after the post-quake closure of its business and an uncertain timeframe for reopening. "The key for us was giving people the choice," he said. "There is a lot of uncertainty. We are uncertain ourselves. This is not something we wanted to do." Key said the casino hoped to reopen. "I think actually SkyCity are doing a very good job here, they've paid their workers for six weeks," he told Breakfast on TV One. "They are saying if you leave at any time and you take your annual leave and you eventually decide to leave, we will still give you four weeks redundancy. "I think in defence of SkyCity they are doing everything they can." Earthquake Recovery Minister Gerry Brownlee said yesterday the casino might be able to reopen elsewhere. "I think one of the issues that we've got to discuss with the casino is whether or not they can reopen with their licence in another location if it's possible," he said. However, Key said that could be costly for the casino and ideally it would be able to reopen at its existing site. Casino licences were geographically specific, but Brownlee said the Earthquake Recovery Bill could give the flexibility for the premises to move. Anderson said his priority was to reopen the casino on its existing site, and to "get our people back in there", but he did not know when that would happen. The Victoria St building, which has a yellow sticker, sustained minor damage. However, it is within the cordon and close to unstable buildings. Anderson said it would take only three to four weeks to repair the casino damage once the cordon was lifted. SFWU tourism and hospitality industry leader Len Richards was advising workers not to accept the redundancy package because it was no more than the four-week notice period they were eligible for anyway. Workers should be receiving 18 weeks redundancy, which was in line with the redundancy provisions at SkyCity Casino in Auckland. "The loss of jobs that has already occurred, plus the inevitable further job losses to come, will create huge social costs," Richards said. The union was seeking an urgent meeting with casino management. However, Anderson said he had yet to receive a union request. He said the union was forgetting staff had already been paid for the past six weeks, at a cost of $410,000 a week. The casino had not been eligible for the Government subsidy because of its ownership structure, Anderson said. It was owned by SkyCity Casinos and Skyline Enterprises. Christchurch Casino employees could express an interest in working at other casinos in New Zealand and Australia. However, the casino would not pay relocation costs. Anderson said three Christchurch staff already had jobs in Dunedin and two were working in Queenstown. SkyCity in Auckland, which had more than 100 jobs available, would give Christchurch staff priority, he said. Casino employee Kelly Hamlin, who has worked in security at the casino for seven years, said he was unsure what to do. "It's just a blow to all the staff. In a way I think we were expecting a wee bit more than what we have been given." Hamlin said he knew the company was in a difficult position but he would have liked to see the casino keep staff. The union is meeting workers at the Hornby Working Men's Club on Friday. We wish our Kiwi friends well on their earthquake recovery.

Australian Gambling's Dark Side: Drugs, Child Neglect, by Greg Tingle - 4th April 2011

G'day punters, casino and gambling millionaires and billionaires, sports nuts, politicians, legal eagles, one and all. Gambling such as having a punt at a land based or online casino can bring many hours of enjoyment, but for a small percentage of people can cause major life issues like drug addiction, family issues such as child neglect, and need we go on. Readers will also be familiar with a couple of Australian professional sportsmen whose gambling (sports betting in the main) have become infamous. Media Man and Gambling911 with a special report, and a remind to bet with your head, not over it...

Queensland: Casino Child Laws Under Microscope...

New laws aimed at stopping children being dumped outside Queensland casinos are failing to stop parents choosing having a punt over parenting. Secret State Government documents reveal a loophole is partly to blame for the continuing problem of children being left outside casinos in cars or lobbies. In the first full year of the new regime in 2009, Jupiters Casino on the Gold Coast recorded 27 cases and the Treasury in Brisbane eight cases of children being abandoned. The land based casinos have defended their performance under the laws, pointing out the total number of abandoned children cases had fallen from 48 in 2008 to 35 in 2009. In one Brisbane case, children aged 15, 13, 9 and 8 were left on the steps outside the Treasury while their mother initially claimed she went to the toilet because she was ill. "After further questioning the mother admitted to leaving the children unattended while she re-entered the casino to gamble on blackjack," a report said. The reports can be revealed after a year-long right to information battle for the documents with gaming giant Tabcorp, the owner of the Brisbane, Gold Coast and Townsville casinos. In December 2008, the Government introduced new laws making it an offence for parents to dump children while gambling, with jail terms of up to 3 years. However, Queensland Police was unable to confirm last week whether anyone had been charged under the new offence at casinos. A ministerial briefing note shows the Office of Liquor and Gaming Regulation believes many of the cases are continuing because the new legislation is not wide enough. In the note, OLGR executive director Michael Sarquis advised that many of the children dumped were aged 12 to 18, putting them outside the scope of the new laws, which only included under-12s. Treasury Casino managing director Geoff Hogg said Tabcorp believed the new laws had helped reduce the number of cases. "This is a direct reflection of the more effective measures Tabcorp are constantly implementing as leaders in this field," he said. However, Australian Family Association spokesman Luke McCormack said the new laws were clearly too narrow. "The 35 cases in a year is quite alarming," he said.

A Media Man spokesperson said "It appears that there is some room for improvement when it comes to the Queensland casino child dumping laws. Perhaps more security patrols are needed. Having said that, land based casinos are not child minding centres either. The responsibility needs to end with the parent or guardian, as in other areas of a child's life".

Parkinson's Disease 'Cure' Linked To Gambling Addiction Says West Australians...

Five West Australians who claim they became gambling addicts after taking medication for Parkinson's disease are among more than 100 Aussies suing two pharmaceutical giants. Heartbreaking cases of financial ruin and family breakdowns are at front and centre of the class action. Aspen Pharmaceuticals and Pfizer Australia are being asked for the first time to defend their respective drugs, Permax and Cabaser. Jot those names down in the black book. The lawsuit claims negligence, defective product and failure to warn of potential dangers. Anne Shortall, who is representing the class action on behalf of Melbourne firm Arnold Thomas and Becker, said some of the clients also developed compulsive sexual behaviour. She said five West Australians were involved in the lawsuit. "The drugs mimic the effect of dopamine in the brain, which is a pleasure-seeking type chemical and can cause addictive-type behaviour," Ms Shortall said. "Most of the clients had an obsessive pathological urge to gamble that they couldn't control, and that has led to huge financial loss and family breakdowns."

Australian Grandmother Says Prescription Drugs Turned Her Into Gambler...

A grandmother claims a prescription drug used for restless leg syndrome turned her into a conwoman and jailbird. Pat Galea alleges the drug made her an addicted gambler who lost roughly $400,000 over 8 years, cost her her marriage and shamed her previously spotless reputation. The Rosebud grandmother of two turned to shoplifting and dishonesty offences to feed her compulsive behaviour. She was jailed for a month after breaching several community-based orders, and was placed on suicide watch. "In the end I wasn't only gambling with money, I was gambling with my life," Mrs Galea, 61, said. Galea is one of 100 people who are taking legal action against two drug giants, claiming to have become addicted to gambling or sex after taking drugs known as "dopamine agonists" to treat Parkinson's disease, restless leg syndrome and other conditions. The drug firms Pfizer and Aspen Pharmacare Australia were served Federal Court writs this week alleging they breached a duty of care to customers. Galea said: "I used to be the one who controlled the (family) finances; and suddenly I was out of control. It was scary, I was a different person, I'd never gambled beforehand and suddenly I was waiting for my pay to lodge and it would be gone the next day. Common sense told me ... it had to be the medication." Galea stopped taking the medication in 2008 and said she had not gambled since. The Australian class action is being run by Anne Shortall of Arnold Thomas & Becker, who said the effects of the compulsive behaviour caused by the medications had been disastrous. "It has caused financial losses, family breakdowns and criminal charges for some clients," she said. "Companies that have profited from the sale of the drugs should have warned of the side-effects and should be held accountable." Aspen Pharmacare refused to comment while Pfizer did not return calls. No surprise with the quietness from the drug companies. Don't suppose they took too much of their own drugs - which sent them quite... just kidding.

A Media Man spokesperson said "On the surface it appears that there is some merit in the claims relating to gambling addiction being caused by dopamine agonists. It wouldn't appear wise for existing gamblers to take the drugs either, or if they need, to have a medical doctor closely monitor the situation, in light of the class action lawsuit".

Wrestling News Media: Snooki, 'The Rock' and 'Mania: When Headlocks and Hollywood Collide - 1st April 2011

One is the queen of MTV's Jersey Shore; the other is WWE's resident Mexican aristocrat. One is famous for being perhaps the worst of the tanned, bouffant-wearing, gum-chomping Italian stereotype. The other invites fans' wrath with a wink and a smile as he drives the world's most expensive cars to the ring and insists on being introduced by his own personal ring announcer - in Spanish.

Only one entity - and one extravaganza - could bring these two very different stars together: World Wrestling Entertainment's 27th annual WrestleMania on Sunday. Snooki will participate in a six-person, inter-gender grudge match while Alberto Del Rio will vie for the World Heavyweight Championship in his WrestleMania debut. Both promise to thrill 70,000-plus screaming fans in Atlanta's Georgia Dome.

"It's going to be the peak of my career," said Del Rio, a native of Mexico. "My family, my entire country, is going to be proud of me because I'm going to go out there and become the new World Heavyweight Champion. I'm going to die out there trying to become the World Heavyweight Champion."

So what's behind the infatuation with WrestleMania? Why do fans come from around the world and dole out hard-earned money to watch this spectacle on pay-per-view? What is it about WrestleMania that makes fathers and sons and daughters jump out of their seats and grown, muscle-bound men in tights speak in hushed reverence?

Simply put, it is pro wrestling's greatest annual event. All wrestlers who grew up as fans dream of performing in it and look forward to watching it. Even in the choreographed world of professional wrestling, there is nothing staged about the emotion and excitement from anyone who performs at WrestleMania.

"As a kid, all I wanted to do was be a wrestler," said Del Rio. "Now that I'm here in WWE - WrestleMania is our NBA, our Super Bowl, our World Series of professional wrestling. As a wrestler, as a performer, I always dreamed of being in something like that."

For the fan, WrestleMania's appeal is as nuanced as wrestling's longtime popularity. Wrestling's magnetism goes hand-in-hand with the dawn of the television age in the 1950s, but WrestleMania took it to another level. It is a marriage of headlocks and Hollywood that began in 1985, when WWE Chairman Vince McMahon teamed up the charisma of Hulk Hogan and the diabolical lunacy of "Rowdy" Roddy Piper with the star power of Mr. T and Cyndi Lauper. Wrestling News Media: Shawn Michaels' Speech At WWE Hall Of Fame Induction 2011: 'Thank You' - 2nd April 2011

Thank you. ["HBK!" chant. "Thank you Shawn!" chant. Whoa! Some other chant.] The damnedest thing on my way to my Hall of Fame speech, a damn roast broke out. Thanks. I knew there was no way you was gonna say anything nice about me. For the 15 years we've known each other he never has, and he never will. He's like the Fonz trying to say he's sorry. [Muttering.]

I know how tough it was for you to say . That was a huge deal for him to even recognize that I worked in this line of work for 36 years. You're not aware of this, but we shared a big moment there. There's some psychiatrists going, "They're starting to heal."

I'm nervous, so don't give me cat calls. [Cat calls.] I've been going over what I'm gonna say. ["One more match!" chant.] You're killing me with the one more match thing. Seriously, I know it's good TV, he'll have a nervous breakdown. We sold out the building! He had a heart attack!

["We love you Shawn!"] I'm serious. For the love of God, help me out here. I don't even know where to start. You know there are things that go between ... I can't say, I'm not supposed to say. That's one of the reasons I was OK to retire. Coincidentally, this is the first year where we're not doing it live. They'll chop it up in post to make sure it's ok to air.

When I was 19 years old, I didn't want to be a sports entertainer. I didn't know at the time. I told my mom and dad, I want to do what those guys do it on TV. Making it was going to be going out in San Antonio and wresting in front of 25 people. Fast forward, and I'm a 45-year-old man, and I get to stand here and say thank you.

Along the way, I wasn't really aware of it. I was raised by a loving family, sitting right down here, who loved me every step of the way and supported me. But for whatever reason when I started doing this line of work at 19 I spent the next 26 years searching for validation. I don't even know why. But what my peers thought of me and what you thought of me was the most important thing in my life. And I worked myself into the ground. It was so important to me that you thought I did a good job. I know that sounds patronizing, but I want to thank you so much for giving me that.

I'm very thankful to all the other inductees and especially Triple H for making this fun and amusing. Because as much as I've tried to not make it a deep and heavy cry fest, I can't do it. There are no words to express how much I lived and breathed to do this every night for so many years. And it begs the question, how am I gonna be OK away from this?

Last Monday the Undertaker had mentioned Shawn Michaels will walk into the Hall of Fame with a ton of regrets. If this had happened in 1998, that might've been true. At that time, I was good at my job, but there's no way I could've stood here with no regrets. And although my family would've been proud of me, I know there would've been a little disappointment for them and a certain guy backstage whose name I'm not allowed to mention. [Crowd WOOs. Guy next to me says "RIC FLAIR!" I believe him!]

I came back in 2002 after being told I'd never wrestle again, for one more match. That was nine years ago. I'm thankful I can stand before you with absolutely no regrets. [Missed a part about God and his family. Sorry.] Since they came into my life, I've had not a regret. Not a second goes by that I'm not thankful. The most precious gift of all is my little family. I love you all so much, and I want to thank you for being so selfless and letting daddy finish what he started.

It was very important to me to come back and go away on my own terms. I love my two children more than anything in the world. Thank you so much for letting daddy go wrestle. [I have a daughter. Totally about to tear up.]

There are countless WWE superstars that I've had to create with. I'd love to mention everybody, but I don't want to make this too long. I don't wanna be that guy. [Crowd WOOs.] You guys are implying that. I'm not saying that. Every year there's somebody, and we're like, dude there's WrestleMania tomorrow. I'm gonna assume you know who you are.

Because I did my best to make sure before I left to tell you how awesome it was for me, and how much I appreciate you guys [makes crazy hand gestures] putting up with me when I wanna do something you don't do all that much. I appreciate your time and patience. I appreciate you being a part of my life. A lot of times all we've got is each other. We're like guys in a fox hole together. But when we're with each other, we're all we got. We can stab each other in the back, but can't nobody else do it.

I wanna thank you for allowing me to be a part of that fraternity. We're always gonna look at everybody else and say you're not gonna understand it. And that's OK. It's something we're gonna take to our graves.

And lastly there's all of you. The WWE universe, the fans. I love every one of you, even when you bother me at 5 in the morning, even when I cuss you, you still come back and forgive me. You have been a part of my life and family for so many years, it begs the question, why would a 19-year-old kid from a wonderful upbringing seek validation from strangers?

One thing people used to always say that separated me is that I could make a connection with you. I don't know if I did a good job, but for the last 26 years whether you were connected to me I have no idea, but I was connected to you. I have never won Most Popular, I wasn't the prom king, I wasn't the homecoming king, so I guess in my adult life the most important thing to me was that you believed in me and thought I was good. On this night, 2011 Hall of Fame, I feel it, I thank you, I love my ring. And I love each and every one of you.

I know this has been sappy. I can't help it. And if you're not down with that, I got two words for you. ("Suck it!" from the crowd.)

Local teacher breaking down barriers for disadvantaged, by Greg Tingle - 31st March 2011

We've all heard the stories of the "too hard basked", "will never get a job", and "in your dreams".

Local teacher, celebrated media businesswoman and artist, Eva Rinaldi, is once again proving the naysayers wrong with her new life skills and wellbeing course tailored for disadvantaged people.

Ms Rinaldi is used to achieving the possible, so when the opportunity presented to teach life skills at The Parramatta College to a dozen people categorized as "disadvantaged" as far as job and business prospects go, she jumped at it.

The class comprises of adult aged students who have to put it mildly, had a really rough go of it in life. We go around the room and learn of the stories of family breakdown, job retrenchment, depression, weight and diet issues, sexual abuse, homelessness and we need not elaborate any further.

Ms Rinaldi said "I feel so blessed to be able to give these people new hope. My life has not been sheltered either and I've had my own share of ups and downs on the rollercoaster of life so I feel that I was hand picked for this most challenging role. I think that everyone one of us has a calling. We are four weeks into the eight week course now and the students are starting to open up to me more about their goals, dreams, aspirations, fears and life journey now. Many of them were quite hesitant at first. We've identified a few diamonds in the rough and we have already got some work experience opportunities confirmed for a number of them and their overall positive mental attitude has increased remarkable".

The charismatic teacher, well known for her media and arts appearances, has been contacting her impressive network of business contacts and has also secured the strong interest of Channel Seven, Andrew McManus Presents, Michael Jacobsen, Media Man and beyondblue. She's already signed up a number of the students as models and artists assistants for her Human Statue BodyArt, organised interviews with Media Man to raise more awareness and to give the students an outlet to share the story, and book into some of them to be St John's Ambulance volunteers at a number of upcoming music and sports events.

Ms Rinaldi said "Every little thing counts and gets them a step closer to where they want to be. You have to keep their spirit alive and heading in the right direction. Even this modest news article helps them see that society cares and has an interest. A very good friend of mine who works in media showed me the documentary of 'The Choir Of Hard Knocks' which showed many disadvantaged people come together and build up a formidable choir. There's were some absolutely golden people with amazing talent. I'm certain we have a similar kind of scenario with the students in my class. They just need to find their niche, and step by step they are. We're all really excited".

Many of the students were hesitant to be interviewed as they want to achieve more first before getting too much attention in the media, but we secured permission to publish some overview details.

Andrew: 55 years, booked into St Johns Ambulance volunteer service, into motorbikes and music and is looking forward to getting back into the workforce.

June: 50 years, long term depression issues, enjoys dancing, is into nutrition and helping others. Eva has identified June as been extremely intelligent.

Sarah: 20 years, long term unemployed and weight loss issues, but has lost 20kg in the last 2 months. Loves her dog and is looking forward to getting out and about more, and easing herself back into the workforce.

In the coming weeks we will be tracking the progress of these never say die students, and Ms Rinaldi promises us that she will have some very special guests coming along to share their own stories, and further reinforce to her class that nothing is impossible, by providing real life examples and genuine work experience opportunities, some of which will likely lead to sustainable employment prospects.

An enthusiastic Ms Rinaldi closed in saying "We have some amazing talented people here with lots to offer and who can't wait to get back to work. The more the naysayers say it can't be done, the more I know it can be. I've made some big comebacks in my own career, and I've been sharing some of the secrets with my class. Together I know we will all cross the finish line. This assignment has been one of my careers biggest challenges, but already its turning into one of the most rewarding".

Nevada regulators OK Caesars tie to online casino - 24th March 2011

Nevada gambling regulators on Thursday voted to allow the world's largest casino company to do business with a Gibraltar company that offers online wagering, marking the first time state officials have blessed a tie to Internet gambling despite the industry's murky legal status.

The Nevada Gaming Commission approved the relationship between Caesars Entertainment Corp. and 888 Holdings PLC, which runs online casinos in the United Kingdom and is publicly traded on the London stock exchange.

The approval came the same day as Nevada lawmakers in Carson City held an initial hearing on a bill that would legalize Internet poker statewide — a bill pushed by a top poker website and opposed by top gambling companies including Caesars, which wants federal legislation instead.

"Whether this bill passes or not, there's going to be pressure on this board and this commission to authorize Internet gaming," Commissioner Randolph Townsend told a Caesars executive just before joining others in unanimous approval of the business tie.

"This is the first of perhaps many relationships that will be developed over time," Townsend said near the end of the two-hour hearing.

The tie allows Caesars, which owns more than 50 casinos in several countries including Caesars Palace and the annual World Series of Poker, to work with 888 to run online gambling sites in the United Kingdom, and free-money sites in other jurisdictions using Caesars brands.

Caesars has been considering online gambling for years, and is positioning itself to be ready in case lawmakers eventually make online gambling legal in the United States.

"The UK is not the end of our plan or our vision," said Mitch Garber, chief executive of Caesars subsidiary Caesars Interactive Entertainment.

Caesars and 888 executives and lawyers told the commission they have been careful in assessing their relationship and the legalities of Internet gambling. 888 stopped offering online wagers in the United States after a federal law in 2006 made it illegal.

Gigi Levy, chief executive of 888, said worldwide online gambling revenue is expected to be $24.2 billion in 2011, and reach $26.1 billion in 2012. He said sports wagering accounts for 41 percent of that, while casino games make up 23 percent and poker 19 percent.

The $4.6 billion online poker industry is 60 percent controlled by the top two operators, Levy said.

Those operators, PokerStars and Full Tilt Poker, have been helping push the Nevada legislation after a last-minute federal effort by U.S. Sen. Harry Reid fell short in December.

Reid's legislation was different from the bill proposed in Nevada in that it would have punished sites that offered gambling to Americans after 2006 by making it tougher for them to get a license under new regulations.

Garber declined to comment on the specifics of the Nevada bill, but said hearings in New Jersey, California and Nevada, as well on the federal level, show the movement is picking up momentum.

"As a company, you clearly know that we have been lobbying and are in favor of legalized and taxable online gaming," Garber said. "We see this all as a very positive development for online gaming and we intend to be at the forefront of all these developments."

The privately held Caesars lost $196.7 million during the fourth quarter ending Dec. 31, on revenue of $2.12 billion.
